Immigration

Prohibited Goods:-

- Liquors and cigarettes marked with the words "Singapore Duty Not Paid" on the labels, cartons or Packets

- Cigarettes with the Prefix "E" printed on the packets

- Chewing Gum (Selected brands only, call to clarify)

- Chewing tobacco and imitation tobacco products

- Cigarette lighters of pistol or revolver shape

- Controlled drugs and psychotropic substances

- Endangered species of wildlife and their by-products

Airport Departure Tax

An airport departure tax of RM 40 is applicable for international flight passengers. For demostic travellers, the tax is RM 5. Children below 2 years old are exempted.

Customs & Duties

Items such as cameras, watches, pens, lighters, cosmetics, perfume and portable cassette players are duty free in Malaysia. Visitors bringing in dutiable goods such as video equipment may have to pay a deposit of up to 50% of the value for temporary importation, refundable when they leave. You advised to carry the receipt of purchase. If you pay any tax or deposit, please ensure that you are given a receipt.

Tourists who stay in Malaysia exceeding 72 hours are exempted from paying taxes on the following:-

- One quart bottle of liquor

- 25gms of tobacco or 200 sticks of cigarettes

- a pair of new shoes

- Electrical and battery-operated personal appliances

- Foodstuff to the value not exceeding RM 75

- Souvenirs and gifts to the value not exceeding RM 200

Restriction

Import licenses are required for firearms and commercial quantities of gold. Please note that Malaysianlaws provide the death penalty for drug trafficking. Other forbbiden items are pornography, flick knives, broadcast receivers of certain frequency, goods from Israel, and animals like piranhas. Self Drive

You need an international driving permit or a valid license issued by your government to drive in Malaysia. Traffic signets and lights are on the left. At roundabouts give way to the drivers on your right. Drivers and front seat passengers are required by law to wear safety belts. Motorist are also warn against "drunk driving" as they might be fined if found by the law to have consumed alcohol exceeding the permissible level.

The Automobile Association of Malaysia (AAM) is the national motoring organisation of Malaysia. Tourists who are members of motoring organisations affiliated to AAM are given free reciprocal membership.


Other Travellers Tips

- Reserved a seat always once your air ticket is confirmed incase of over bookings.

- A copied of your passport of birth certificate with your partner just incase you lost your passport. Best is to scan your documents and email to your email address carry some photos for lost of passport too.

- Split your cash into different bags case of robbery. Best is to use credit cards at all time with little cash on hand.

- If you are intending to take up a diving course, have your lung check first in your country and obtained a letter for verification to prevent rechecking again.

- If you have a sensitive stomach, try not to eat from the roadside stalls and avoid spicy stuff.
